Interview: Nazim Akrami, Country Director of Afghanistan Libre

Can you tell us about your professional background?

My name is Mohammed Nazim Akrami. I used to work on the front line against the Taliban regime on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Later, in 2001 I was recruited as a logistics officer in the organization Afghanistan Libre, and until 2016 I was in charge of logistical, project coordination, as well as fulfilling safety and security duties. Mid-2016 I was appointed Country director of Afghanistan Libre, in Kabul.

What does your work at Afghanistan Libre imply?

Afghanistan Libre provides better quality education for girls through digital classrooms, board exam preparation classes, WASH program and kindergarten. Our main activities were about empowering women and providing them with income-generating activities, like sewing training courses as well supporting pregnant women and preventing mother and children mortality through midwife consultation programs.

What are the most important values in your job?

Diligence, honesty, integrity, and delivering our services to people in need, especially women who are suffering from major inequalities due to huge hindrances, insecurity and decades of war in the country : those are our core priorities.

Can you explain the actions you implemented to respond to the COVID-19 crisis?

Afghanistan Libre can address the COVID-19 pandemic in 2 Afghan provinces. We have already gained relevant experience by implementing a brief successful
COVID-19 response project in the Paghman district (Kabul province). The project included activities such as: manufacturing face mask (by former beneficiaries of our sewing training), compiling and printing COVID-19 pictorial and textual informative booklets as well as purchasing hygiene equipment and dispatching them in parcels for the most vulnerable families in the Paghman district. The officials of the district accepted the equipment with gratitude.
We have designed a scheme to implement another COVID-19 response project in the Parwan and Kapisa provinces, through activities such as manufacturing face masks, printing informative COVID-19 booklets, distributing hygiene materials to families and broadcasting awareness through local radio channels. We plan to reach 400,000 families.

Three SOS GROUP’s organisations awarded with an Erasmus+ fund

This year, SOS GROUP is thrilled to announce that three of its organizations were successfully granted an Erasmus+ fund! This program, put forward by the European Union, offers stakeholders in social entrepreneurship major funding opportunities for projects related to mobility, education or training. The SOS GROUP’s organizations which received this fund are Fermes d’Avenir, Artemis and Silver Fourchette.

Silver Fourchette: eat well, live well!

Over the last decades, the trend towards longer life expectancy remained consistently steady in Europe. Yet, one should remember that living longer does not necessarily imply living in a healthy condition. In fact, EU citizens’ healthy life expectancy remains fairly low, with an average of 64.2 years for women and 63.5 years for men.

Wishing to provide an answer to the issue of undernutrition among seniors, the Silver Fourchette team, partnering with 4 organizations (Pour la Solidarité (Belgium), UNA 47 (France), Bras dessus Bras dessous (Belgium) and ODPS (Portugal)), worked together on the project Eat@home. Its purpose: to delay the loss of autonomy of seniors by giving them healthy eating habits and by providing them with delicious gourmet meals – matching their physiological needs.

During this project, all partners will pool their expertise and know-how to create 3 outputs focused on healthy eating practices (a compilation of the acquired knowledge and skills regarding nutrition of the elderly; a recipe book for people aged over 60 and a guidebook for their caregivers). Ultimately, the ambition of Eat@home is to change the way we perceive the process of aging and provide practical tools to put the health of seniors back into their own hands.

The « Eat@home » project is co-financed by the European funding program Erasmus+.

Artemis: fighting hateful contents, misinformation and conspiracy theories

The rise of social media has undeniably increased young people’s exposure to hateful content, misinformation and conspiracy theories. To develop European solutions to these emerging challenges, Artemis – an SOS GROUP organization – created the project « ReNews », together with four European partners: the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (United Kingdom), Civis Polonus (Poland), Tink (Turkey), Mouvement UP (France).

During their collaboration, the organizations will share their expertise in order to produce – and help students elaborate – a wide range of pedagogical tools on media and information literacy (articles, podcasts, videos, tips on how to set up media literacy workshops, etc.). The methodologies and content will be freely accessible online by every professional in the social-educational field.

Thanks to this pool of resources, teachers will become more familiar with innovative practices, and strengthen their ability to identify, analyze and respond to hateful content. Overall, the ReNews project will help teachers further sharpen their students’ critical sense and promote the adoption of safer online browsing behaviours.

The « ReNews » project is co-financed by the European funding program Erasmus+.

Fermes d’Avenir: training for a new farming system

With its project « Companions in Agroecology », the organization Fermes d’Avenir (SOS GROUP) promotes a farming system that better serves the living conditions of farmers and respects the environment. Designed with three European partners (Vert d’Iris (Belgium), MAP (Belgium) and Rete Humus (Italy)), the project « Companions in Agroecology » intends to train the next generation of farmers in sustainable agricultural methods.

The project ecompasses four training workshops, each addressing different topics such as agroforestry, horticulture, the management of educational farms or innovative tools to assess soil fertility.

Over a three-year period, 24 European trainers will share their expertise and knowledge with more than a hundred adult learners. This new pedagogy put forward by the « Companions in Agroecology » project will provide farmers with innovative agro-ecological methods and offer people excluded from the workforce useful skills to start a career in an agricultural profession.

The « Companions in Agroecology » project is co-financed by the European funding program Erasmus+.

Congratulations to the three SOS GROUP organizations granted with an Erasmus+ fund. They show, once again, that SOS GROUP is fully committed to developing social entrepreneurship on a European scale.

Social entrepreneurship, a key for cooperation and exchange among Balkan youth

Led by a consortium gathering the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), GROUPE SOS Pulse, the South East European Youth Network (SEEYN), the Institut Francais, and the Franco-German Youth Office (OFAJ), the RISE project (Regional Incubator for Social Entrepreneurs) aims to enrich the Western Balkans social entrepreneurship ecosystem and enable young people to develop innovative societal solutions thus contributing to reconciliation and cooperation in the region.

Promoting Balkan youth reconciliation

A positive change in the Western Balkans is possible. Stability and prosperity will be achieved only by fostering reconciliation and cooperation in the region.

RISE will assist over 200 young entrepreneurs from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia in developing their social business ideas. Through a series of workshops, mobility programs and financial support, young people will have a chance to learn, grow, develop their businesses while helping solve issues affecting their local communities.

Six local incubators will implement this regional assistance program designed by GROUPE SOS Pulse in partnership with the consortium.

Backing up regional mobility

The RISE project promotes dialogue and cooperation between actors and between territories through the mobility of its participants, the organization of regional trainings, exchange workshops and events as well as through the creation of a network of young entrepreneurs.

This three-year-long project started on October 1, 2019. It is co-funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO).
